A Mixed Bag...

Something a little different today, with a complete assortment of information!  From events that happened "on this day" to some miscellaneous stuff, plus a return visit to a topic I posted here a few months ago.  Hopefully, there should be something to interest everyone...

Today is the 19th of September, and there are a few notable Britons who were born today.  These include :

1934 - Brian Epstein (former manager of The Beatles)
1946 - John Coghlan (original drummer for Status Quo)
1947 - Lol Creme (musician/singer of Godley and Creme, and 10cc)
1948 - Jeremy Irons (actor)
1949 - Leslie Hornby (model and actress under the name of Twiggy)

Today is also the anniversary of the death of :

Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC DSO and Bar DFC and Bar.

Best known for leading the successful air attacks on the Mohne and Eder Dams in 1943 (The Dambusters),  Wing Commaner Gibson also made a single-handed attack on the Tirpitz (the Bismarck's sister ship).  He was killed when shot down over the Netherlands in 1944.

Sadly, there have been several other deaths on September 19th, resulting from train crashes.  In 1986, two trains collided in Staffordshire, killing two and injuring over 100.  Eleven years later, six died and more than 150 were injured, when an Inter-City 125 slammed into an empty goods train near Southall, in London.

If you hadn't heard, today (2014) was also a memorable day; the referendum on Scottish Independence saw the Scots vote to remain a part of Great Britain!

Getting away from events on this day, here is a mock infra-red view of Carshalton Ponds.  I used to pass the ponds every day on my way to school, and it never looked like this.  I must commend Julian Heath on making it look a lot more beautiful than it actually is!  Nah, I can't really complain, as it is a nice area...

Finally, I would like to go back to an earlier post.  In May, I commented on the risks of being a football manager in Britain.  With the 2014/15 season barely six weeks old, we have seen a number of managerial casualties.  So far, we have lost :

Mark Robins (Huddersfield Town)
Tony Pulis (Crystal Palace)
Dave Hockaday (Leeds United)
Graham Kavanagh (Carlisle United)
Joe Dunne (Colchester United)
James Beattie (Accrington Stanley)
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Cardiff City)
Felix Magath (Fulham)

Some of the above departures were by "mutual consent" rather than being booted out, but there often is little difference.  Of course, one can add Port Vale's Micky Adams, who resigned after six successive defeats - probably before being sacked...
