22nd July...

Today is the 203rd day of 2015, and is the anniversary of many events.  Here are some of the events that have happened on this day in history.  Of course, they are related to Britain and the British in some way!

1298 - The Battle of Falkirk was won.  One of the battles during the Wars of Scottish Independence saw William Wallace's Scottish army defeated by the forces of England's King Edward I.

1621 - Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, was born in the village of Wimbornes St. Giles, Dorset.  A prominent politician, he held a number of offices, including Chancellor of the Exchequer (1881-1672).

1862 - Cosmo Duff-Gordon was born.  A leading fencer, Duff-Gordon won a silver medal at the 1906 Olympics as a member of the Great Britain team.  He also survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

1892 - Jack MacBryan was born in Box, Wiltshire.  MacBryan was a member of the Great Britain and Ireland hockey team which won gold at the 1920 Olympics.  A capable cricketer, he also made a solitary appearance for England in a rain-interrupted test against South Africa.  This appearance left him as the only test cricketer to have not batted, bowled, or dismissed anyone in the field!

1932 - John Meade Falkner, author of the 1898 novel Moonfleet, died in Durham.

1995 - Harold Larwood, England cricketer, died in Australia, aged 90.  One of the finest fast bowlers of his era, Larwood is best remembered for his involvement in the "bodyline" bowling controversy during the 1932-33 tour of Australia.

2013 - Prince George of Cambridge, son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, was born at St. Mary's Hospital in London.  Prince George is currently third in line to the throne.
