League Update...

I know I am a day later than usual, but I just wanted to include another Saturday's action!  Yes, it's time for my first post of the footy season!  The league is now a month old, and while there's a long way to go, it is starting to take shape.

With England taking on San Marino in the European Championship qualifiers today, there is no Premier League action today.  However, Manchester City are already looking to be the team to beat, sitting in pole position with a 100% record.  None of the other usual contenders have shown anything great so far, and Chelsea, in particular, have been very disappointing.

The top of the table has a slightly unfamiliar look about it, with Crystal Palace, Leicester, and Swansea sitting right behind city.  At the other end, Sunderland appear to be in for another season of struggling, and their near-neighbours Newcastle don't look any better.

Dropping a division to the Championship, south-coasters Brighton have made an impressive start, collecting four wins and a draw from their five appearances, and they sit three points clear of Hull, Ipswich, and QPR.  Birmingham have a game in hand on the leading clubs, and a win would put them up to second on 11 points.

Down at the bottom, northern teams dominate. Blackburn, Huddersfield, and Bolton have just 3 points, while Rotherham have gained just a solitary point so far.

In League One, Gillingham head the pack with 13 points, one ahead of Walsall.  Sheffield United and Burton Albion are a point back, and Rochdale and Swindon are both on 11.  Tomorrow's clash between Burton and Coventry could be interesting!  A win for the Brewers would put them top, but sixth-place Coventry could move up to second with a victory.

Crewe are currently holding up the rest, courtesy of brace of draws from their six matches, while Colchester's three draws are keeping them a point ahead.  Blackpool's win today at Scunthorpe - their first away victory since April 2014 - lifted them off the foot of the table, and they are now level on 4 points with Millwall and Peterborough.

Leyton Orient still lead League Two, despite a 4-0 hammering today at Exeter, with the home team moving up to joint fifth.  Wycombe Wanderers are second, a point behind the O's, with Plymouth and Portsmouth two points back.  Thing is, it's still very tight at the top.  My beloved AFC Wimbledon drew with Mansfield today - again, failing to protect an early lead - which leaves them in thirteenth position.  Still, they are only ONE point out of a playoff spot!  Yep, it's that close, and seventeenth place York could move up to joint fifth with a win!

Newport are sitting in the basement with just a point, and Yeovil are taking the other relegation position.  Notts County were very active in the transfer market during the close season, and are surprisingly unimpressive so far.  They are one clear of Yeovil, alongside Barnet.

As I said, there is still a long way to go, and I will be back with regular updates during the season.
