You will probably notice that I have not included the term "lake" in any of these descriptions. That is simply because they are not known by that term. The suffixes "mere" and "water" mean "lake", so the name "Lake Windermere" would actually mean "Lake Winder Lake"! Also used widely is the term "tarn". Bassenthwaite Lake is the only "lake" in the Lake District.
Also located in the region is England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike.
