English Football Team Names (Part One)...

Last year, I published about some of the more unusual team names in Scottish football.  This time, it is the turn of the English.  None of the teams mentioned here are currently competing in the Football League itself, but are all active in regional and local league play.  They are also all members of the Football Association, and played in the Preliminary Round of the 2015-16 F.A.Cup.

Unfortunately, I don't necessarily have information on why the teams have the names they do (many were formed from local business and organisations), but I'm sure you won't have heard of most of them!

Seven Acre and Sidcup

Based in the London Borough of Bexley, the team was founded in 1900 as Seven Acre Sports.  In 2011, the club moved to a new ground in Sidcup, and changed its name.  The team is a founder member of the Kent Invicta League.

AFC Wolfrunians

Founded in 2005, they are an offshoot of the Old Wolfrunians Sports and Social Club, located in Castlecroft, West Midlands.  They currently play in the Midland League, Premier Division.

Romulus

Established in 1979 as a youth development club, Romulus F.C. have evolved into a successful adult club.  From Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands, the club have produced a number of quality players, including former England forward, Darius Vassell,

Sporting Khalsa

Another side from the West Midlands, the team started out in 1991 to give opportunities to local Asian youngsters, and has developed into so much more than that.  Sporting Khalsa won the 2014-15 West Midlands Regional League, losing only one game all season.

Harrogate Railway

From the Northern Premier League, the team was founded in 1935 from workers at the Starbeck LNER locomotive shed!  In 2007-08, their second round F.A. Cup clash with Mansfield Town (which they lost 3-1) was shown live on BBC TV's Match of the Day.

Armthorpe Welfare

Based in Armthorpe, South Yorkshire, the Northern Counties East League Premier Division side was founded in 1926.

Runcorn Linnets

The Cheshire club was formed in 2006 as a replacement for Runcorn F.C. Halton, which had resigned from the league.  The team competes in the North West Counties Football League.  If you don't know, a linnet is a small bird of the finch family.

Pontefract Collieries

Formed in the early 1960's when Pontefract United merged with a local youth team, the new side resurrected the name which had had been used by a previous team.  They compete in the Northern Counties East League.

Shaw Lane Aquaforce

Another Yorkshire team, they are based in Barnsley, and play in the Northern Premier League, Division One South.  The team was officially formed in 2012, after several mergers of local sides.

Prescot Cables

A fan-owned club, the team's home ground is Valerie Park, in Prescot, Merseyside.  The club's history dates back to 1884.  They are currently competing in the Northern Premier League, Division One North.  The name comes from a local business, British Insulated Cables which was founded in 1890.
