A Musician With Short Hair...

Today is a simple tribute to the passing of yet another legend.  Sir George Martin passed away earlier this week at the age of 90.  There are many detailed obituaries and tributes out there already, so I won't bother with duplicating any.

While he is of course best-known for his work with The Beatles, Martin was also a very accomplished musician and arranger with his own orchestra.  What I am posting today is one of my all-time favourite albums, one I picked up on vinyl when I was a lad.

Of course, there have been many, many Beatles tribute albums and covers, but this is certainly the greatest in my opinion.  It is a 1964 album by George Martin and his Orchestra called Off the Beatle Track, and is simply some brilliant instrumental versions of the band's hits.

Unfortunately, the album is still not as popular as it should be, but who knows, Sir George's passing might change that?  Yes, it is dated, but the whole album has such a wonderful jazzy feel, so typical of the era.

The title of this post is actually derived from the album's liner notes, written by John Lennon in his usual style.  The notes start, "George Martin is a tall man.  He is also a musician with short hair."

Here is the complete album.

Enjoy!

Sir George Martin
(3rd January 1926 - 8th March 2016)
