Here I am with the promised updates from the weekend's action in footy's second tier.
Friday's game saw Derby County's winless run extend to six matches as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Molineux. The win kept Wolves very much in contention for a play-off spot, and they now sit just two points behind Brentford. The Bees themselves could have done better, and it took two late goals to rescue a point at home to Millwall.
An early kick-off on Saturday at the Goldlands Stadium brought another home victory for Bournemouth, who regained the top spot. A comfortable three-goal win pushed Middlesbrough down to third, although they are still just a point behind the Cherries!
Norwich City, meanwhile, kept in touch with the leaders with a 3-1 win at Carrow Road, Although not out of the running mathematically, this defeat effectively ends Nottingham Forest's push for promotion. Still in ninth, Forest are now nine points adrift of the playoffs, and with seven games left, they would need a minor miracle to clinch a knockout place.
Finally, a last-minute winner at Vicarage Road gave Ipswich the three points against second-placed Watford. This win put Ipswich into the all-important sixth spot, level with Derby, one point ahead of Brentford, and two ahead of Wolves.
I know you are probably confused, so here it is :
1 - 73 - Bournemouth
2 - 72 - Watford
---------------------------------------
3 - 72 - Middlebrough
4 - 70 - Norwich City
5 - 67 - Derby County
6 - 67 - Ipswich Town
---------------------------------------
7 - 66 - Brentford
8 - 65 - Wolverhampton Wanderers
So, I would think that the top two earning automatic promotion would come from the top four as they stand right now. Of course, the other two should - note SHOULD - be in the playoffs, but Norwich certainly aren't safe with Brentford and Wolves ready to pounce if any of the top six teams slip...
