1897 - British colonial officers Lt. Charles Egerton Ayerst and Charles Walter Rand were assassinated in Pune, India.
1910 - English tenor, Sir Peter Pears was born in Farnham, Surrey.
1911 - King George V was crowned King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
1932 - Actress Prunella Scales CBE (Sybil in Fawlty Towers) was born in Sutton Abinger, Surrey.
1933 - Miner John Thomson died after being struck by a rock at the Lingerwood Pit, Newbattle, Scotland. On the same day, another Scottish miner, John Gardner Fowler was killed by debris from a shot at the No 15 Clay Pit, Gartliston.
1936 - English racing driver Tim Birkin died in London, at age 36. The exact cause of death is still open to debate.
1940 - Dame Esther Rantzen, journalist and television presenter was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.
1978 - Twice Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was born in Emberton, Buckinghamshire.
1984 - A Boeing 747 left London Heathrow Airport for Newark, New Jersey, to become Virgin Atlantic's first ever flight.
1986 - England exited the World Cup at the quarter-final stage, thanks to Argentinian Diego Maradona's infamous "Hand of God goal".
2015 - England's defeat Norway 2-1 at the Women's Football World Cup in Canada. This is the first time the team has ever won a knockout match at a World Cup.
