...is the 271st day of the year.  With just 94 days left until 2016, we will have a look at some of the events that have occurred on this day in history.

1066 - William the Conqueror (otherwise known as William, Duke of Normandy), leads the Norman invasion of England, leading to him being crowned William I.

1852 - The British astronomer and meteorologist Isis Pogson was born in Oxford.  It is likely that she was given the name "Isis" due to the stretch of the River Thames flowing through Oxford being known by that name.  Pogson was the first woman to be become a member of the Royal Astronomical Society.

1918 - One of the last major battles of World War I, the Fifth Battle of Ypres (in Belgium) started on this day, and lasted until October 2.  The British forces suffered nearly 4,700 casualties (dead, wounded, or missing) during the battle.

1932 - Scottish television producer and executive Jeremy Isaacs was born in Glasgow.  After working on such notable series as World in Action, What the Papers Say, and Panorama, Isaacs produced the acclaimed 26-part The World at War for Thames Television.  Isaacs was the founding CEO of Channel 4, and was also General Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

1934 - Actress Janet Munro was born in Blackpool.  She died from a heart attack at age 38.

1971 - The UK Parliament passes the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, thus prohibiting the medicinal use of cannabis.

1992 - Cradley Heath speedway star Wayne Garratt died in hospital fifteen days after crashing at Newcastle, while on loan to the home team.  He was 23.
